The University of Kentucky Solar Eclipse Ballooning Team is a student-led project designed to capture footage of the 2017 Solar Eclipse from an altitude of 60,000 – 80,000 feet. Partnering with 60+ other collegiate and high school teams across the country, this is a nationwide endeavor, years in the making, to document a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event. All teams, including Team Kentucky will be streaming the eclipse LIVE from the edge of space at http://eclipse.stream.live/
Cameras and location-tracking software, built by students on the project, are carried to the edge of space by high-altitude weather balloons. Students on the team are responsible for the launch and recovery of these balloons and the attached payloads, leading to exciting balloon chases across Kentucky and beyond.
