Team Kentucky Solar Eclipse

UK Engineering Eclipse Ballooning Team

The University of Kentucky Solar Eclipse Ballooning Team is a student-led project designed to capture footage of the 2017 Solar Eclipse from an altitude of 60,000 – 80,000 feet. Partnering with 60+ other collegiate and high school teams across the country, this is a nationwide endeavor, years in the making, to document a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event. All teams, including Team Kentucky will be streaming the eclipse LIVE from the edge of space at http://eclipse.stream.live/

Cameras and location-tracking software, built by students on the project, are carried to the edge of space by high-altitude weather balloons. Students on the team are responsible for the launch and recovery of these balloons and the attached payloads, leading to exciting balloon chases across Kentucky and beyond. Cameras and location-tracking software, built by students on the project, are carried to the edge of space by two high-altitude weather balloons. Students on the team are involved in all aspects of the design, fabrication, testing, launch and recovery of these balloons and the attached payloads, leading to exciting balloon chases across Kentucky and beyond.

The Kentucky Solar Eclipse Ballooning Team will travel to Russellville, Kentucky on August 21st to launch their two balloons to capture unique images and video of the rare total solar eclipse of the sun. If you would like to support amazing students and projects like this, please Donate.
